almost two

January 16, 2007, 11:54 am

Here I go again, getting nostalgic and awestruck as Huck’s second birthday approaches. Is this the way it’s going to be from now on? Will Huck be a middle aged man avoiding my phone calls come January and February?

Every minute now Huck does or says something new, so I’ve actually fallen behind in recording it all because there’s just too much of it. So I’ll tell a few anecdotes and include a few pictures and call it a day.

Last weekend we celebrated Kadin’s first birthday, and while at the party next door Huck began showing everyone how he can make his body into letters. Everyone was chuckling and applauding as he proudly turned into kind of an R and sort of a T, and then he spread his legs really far apart, held onto an imaginary something or other in front of him, and began doing a kind of awkward dance that you might see at a strip club. The sweet giggles turned into shocking laughter as Huck began chanting, “Mommy do that! Mommy do that!” getting closer and closer to the ground. It was way too noisy for me to explain that all day long Huck does and says things followed by, “Mommy do that” or “Daddy do that,” meaning he wants us to imitate him. All I know is everyone now thinks I’m a dirty dancer in my own home, including our preacher Charlie whose laughter became horrified screams at the sight of Huck’s gyrations.

Since toddlers aren’t known for their polite manners (see above story), we’ve been teaching Huck little things he can say to mask his outrageously rude demands. Obviously “please” goes a long way, but the best one is “excuse me.” He was getting into the habit of shouting for us very urgently, repeating our names louder and louder until we were in his face giving him every single bit of attention we had. He continues to do this, but now he adds a very charming “Scuse me, Mommy! Scuse me, Daddy!” All day long.

Huck’s latest verbal achievement is that he puts all the words together to make normal sentences. For instance, he’ll say, “Scuse me, Mommy, please get off the couch,” or “Scuse me, Daddy, please sit on the floor,” or “Scuse me, Mommy, please get the ball,” or “Scuse me, Daddy, please open the fridgerator,” or “No, Max! No, no! Quiet, Max! Quiet!” And sometimes out of the blue he'll touch my face very sweetly and say, “I love you” like he knows exactly what that means. Which I think he does, since he hears it a hundred times a day.

Here are some pictures to show you what happens every time Huck and Pappy T paint together. Sometimes they use paper.

forever friends

January 9, 2007, 12:24 pm

We got to be next door neighbors with our friends Sharron, Mark and Gus, who came to New York for a week and stayed in Brian, Tiffany and Kadin's apartment while they were in North Carolina. Being next door neighbors with dear friends is a wonderful thing, and taking baths with next door neighbors is nothing but fun! (Well, when you're almost two, that is.)

kindred spirit

January 7, 2007, 9:46 am

You know how sometimes you meet someone and feel an immediate connection with them? Somehow you just click and you think to yourself, “Where have you been all my life?” Well, that’s what it’s like with Huck. It’s not even been two years since we met, but it’s like he’s been here all along.

Happy 22 months birthday, Huck!
