he really, really likes to color

February 18, 2006, 5:40 pm

Probably all babies love to color, but since Huck's grandpa Buck and his Pappy T are both artists, I can't help but feel that his love for coloring is genetic. Today we got him some bathtub crayons that we're hoping really are washable. Currently there is a love note on the bathroom sink from Daddy and one on the bath tub from me. If Huck doesn't take to the crayons, at least we will.

Huck is slowly learning "no" and it mainly applies to what he can't put in his mouth. He loves to "clean" for us with paper towells, but eventually he tries to eat them. He always gets my attention and holds the little piece of paper up to his mouth, smiling with a concerned look in his eyes as he anticipates my "no." He thinks this is the most delightful game ever. So the only problem with coloring is that it always ends with him trying to eat the crayons. Someone, please, invent some edible Crayolas!

It's been a few hours since I posted all of this and the bath crayons have officially been tested. They are such a hit that we can't seem to get Huck out of the tub. Actually, I can't seem to get Huck or Troy out of the tub. Our bathroom is now a strange little art studio.

dancin' and talkin'

February 12, 2006, 1:45 pm

The other day Huck began dancing wildly in his high chair to a Violent Femmes song, followed by a Stevie Wonder tune. My favorite move was the freeze and grunt.

And we were wrong about "Duck" being his first word. Alas, it seems to just be one of his favorite sounds. His First Official Word is "Hot," with "Dog" being a close second. I always point to my coffee in the morning and say "hot," and now so does he, only he's fancy and says it with a charming Hebrew accent. He also points to Max and neighbor dog Micah and calls them what they are. Perhaps we should introduce hot dogs to him and really blow his mind?

standing

February 9, 2006, 12:09 pm

Huck is standing on his own more and more these days, making Mama and Max laugh nervously. Sometimes Huck lets go of something and then takes a risky little step towards me, always collapsing into my arms happily. He is really proud of this new trick and talks about it all day long while playing with his Danny Dog, farm magnets, zebra puppet and every other gift he has ever been given.

a special day

February 7, 2006, 9:02 am

Happy 11 months birthday, Huck!

To celebrate we will go to our Tuesday morning play group held at the church where I will continue teaching Huck that it's not the end of the world when a two year old steals toys from him. Then we will take a little walk, take a nap, cheer and applaud when Daddy comes home for lunch, eat some Cheerios and avocados, play with trains, blocks and TV remotes, read books, play some peekaboo, sing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" with my new choreography I just invented yesterday, laugh at how funny Max is, practice standing alone, review what "no" means over and over again, take another nap (probably both of us), eat some more Cheerios, cuddle with his gigantic Pooh Bear, give Max a walk, another quick review of "no," cheer and applaud when Daddy comes home, eat some Cheerios and dinner, play the recorder, sing a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday to Huck" complete with excellent harmony, learn some Spanish from Daddy, play with Monopoly the Monkey puppet, listen to Daddy read books with exciting voices, and finally go to bed. What a day! We better get started.
