good throw

February 25, 2008, 2:09 pm

Finally New York has gotten some snow and now it takes five times as long to get anywhere because Huck wants to walk in it and "play snowballs." This morning I was going into one of my blah-blah-blah lectures when he threw a snowball directly into my mouth. That's one way to shut a Mommy up.

If anyone needs help shoveling, give Troy and Huck a call.

the people from brooklyn

February 17, 2008, 9:19 pm

Last night was a very exciting one for Huck. First he got to take the A train 25 stops and the G train two more! Between the 22nd and 23rd stops, he got to go underwater and then he was in his beloved Brooklyn where so many people he loves live.

That could have been enough for the little fellow who was fast approaching his bedtime, but standing on the corner of Smith and Union something magical happened. Pappy T recognized the biggest celebrity in our home standing right there next to us waiting for the light to change. There was Lauren from the band Balthrop, Alabama, a not-for-kids group that the three of us love. No words can describe how much Huck loves their song “Explode,” which is about the world ending and all of us dying. Everyday I hear him singing it while playing with his toys, and thankfully he gets almost all of the words wrong. Just a few days ago Troy and I edited one of their not-for-kids words with our awkward singing voices so that the song could be used in Huck’s three year birthday DVD, because it would not be complete without it.

We struck up a conversation with the beautiful and famous Lauren, we three extra giggly and nervous, and not only did she talk to us for a while, but she gave Huck a kiss and posed for this picture.

This morning he told everyone in the church nursery that last night he met Lauren from Brooklyn and she kissed him.

To top off his incredible evening, we got to spend the next several hours with Michael, Shannon, John and Shana, a once in a lifetime opportunity that happily keeps coming round.

PS: If you watch our home movie called “Huck Sings,” he refers to Balthrop, Alabama when he sings “the people from Brooklyn,” which is what he thinks they’re called.

some things you should know about huck

February 13, 2008, 10:57 am

He’s begun collecting super balls from the pizza parlor, putting them in his pockets, taking them everywhere he goes, and somehow always losing them. His little brain figured out the mystery the other evening when he got out of his bath, held onto his testicles and said, “I guess I ate some balls and they went into my body and here they are. I guess that’s what happened. I guess I ate some balls. Here they are. The balls I guess I ate.” It felt like he was never going to stop talking as I suddenly got very busy preparing to brush his teeth and trying hard not to giggle like I was in junior high.

Sometimes he has nightmares and wakes up (or just screams out in his sleep) things like, “NO! MINE!” or "THERE'S A BEE IN MY BED!" The morning after the bee incident he began chuckling like a 50 year old and said, “I’m sorry, it wasn’t a bee. It was a stag beetle.” One morning after a particularly restless night he explained that he was “standing on the edge in danger," and today he asked if we remembered his dream that went like this, "A one-a, a two-a, a three-a and was blackish." I love that he thinks we experience his dreams, and I wish we could.

He's crazy for the computer and knows how to pull up the Internet, click on Sesame Street's website and begin playing games all by himself. The good thing about this hobby is that the games are fun and educational, teaching him about rhyming, sorting, connecting the dots, words, object identification, and the importance of cookies. The bad thing is that whenever we grown-ups sit down to play on the computer, Huck begins stalking us (like right now) asking every three seconds if it’s his turn yet. I was hoping for a few more years before getting a second computer.

Thanks to a wonderful South African story called "Abbiyoyo," he pretends to be a magician and uses his wand to make us disappear and reappear. No matter how obvious we are during these tricks he completely believes he is magic. And now I'm beginning to believe, because just moments ago he took about 30 wooden letters and spelled out a long and crazy word all by himself, and in the middle of the nonsense was "M-A-G-I-C."

It's a very cold, icy day here in New York and we are stuck inside again. I tried to turn the weather into spring, but I'm not as magical as Huck. Looks like a few more weeks of these kinds of pictures ...

wild thing

February 7, 2008, 7:49 pm

This morning at our Thursday group FAC-PAC (Family Arts Cooperative - Parents and Children), Huck performed in his first ever "show." The kids got to design the forest backdrop (brown paper taped to tables turned on their side), create their own puppet/masks, rehearse without parents (we were sent to a little side room during this five minutes of chaos), and then perform the story of "Where the Wild Things Are." Of all the two and three year olds in this motley crew, Huck was the most enthusiastic performer, and he was also the only Wild Thing happily singing about Jesus. As you can see from the final picture, he even took a proper bow.

It was a nice way to celebrate one exact month until his third birthday.
