little me

April 27, 2005, 7:34 pm

There are a lot of things about Huck that remind me of myself. I was kind of hoping he'd have Troy's personality, but so far he seems to be all Jonny. All JJ. (Except for his appetite, which is clearly all Troy) He seems to have my little temper and impatience, which is often cute but sometimes intense. I get no sympathy from my parents, who like to remind me what a temperamental little thing I was. But he also has this great smile and giggle and can be easily entertained.

To quote my favorite author Anne Lamott, I like that in a baby.

Here's a picture of me at two months and Huck at seven weeks and three days. We're both drunk in these pictures.

new game

April 23, 2005, 6:47 pm

In honor of Troy's birthday today Huck decided he loves to look at himself in the mirror. He smiles very knowingly and then giggles for a while. I think he finds himself quite attractive, to be honest. This new game joins his old favorites Tickle Bee, Mr. Blender, Troy's Drawings, I'm Kissing You, Where's Your Tongue?, Where's Your Nose? and Mama's Crazy Facial Expressions. Very low standards for entertainment around here ...

superbaby

April 18, 2005, 5:33 pm

Huck is really strong. Everybody thinks so. (Well, his mom, dad, grandma and aunt do.) He's been lifting his head up since about day two and it's very impressive.

He enjoys doing pushups.

Here he is standing.

Here he is using a fork.

He's a superhero in the making.

subway day

April 15, 2005, 7:49 pm

Today was Huck's first subway ride!

I realize that Troy's sunglasses may be distracting you in these pictures. I hope you are able to see past the sunglasses and notice how cute Huck looks as he takes in his subway surroundings.

Troy's favorite place in New York is Times Square, so we decided that should be Huck's first place to visit.

Now you all know how much I love our city and how excited I am to raise Huck here. None of that has changed. However, I must say that when you go into the streets of this city with your own little baby things seem a little ... well ... loud and fast and scary. I didn't realize cars drove so fast here. And people are so aggressive! Maybe all first time parents go through this no matter where they live. Troy has already declared that Huck must never, ever be allowed to ride in a car. We realize this is impossible, but seriously, how do you people do it?

After Times Square we went our separate ways in order to do secret birthday shopping. Troy took Huck and got lots of cute smiles and attention from passers-by. The best one was from Ethan Hawk himself, out with his new lady and his kids with Uma Thurman. Mr. Hawk gave Mr. Huck very intense eye contact. I think he recognized Huck's superstar quality. As our friend Brian said, "Ethan Hawk Gawked at Huck." Try saying that five times fast.

So we survived Huck's first big city outing! Now we aren't going to leave our apartment for at least five years.

good taste in art

April 13, 2005, 7:33 pm

Apparently babies love black and white images because they can see the contrast so well. Upon learning this Troy used his artistic abilities to help Huck. The result is a mesmerized baby who sometimes cannot take his eyes off Troy's drawing.

Sometimes it is hard to get things done when you have a baby. Not when you have a black and white Troy original!

I think Troy should sell his drawings to parents everywhere. Huck could star in the commercials.

it takes a village, or at least a grandma

April 10, 2005, 9:14 am

Last night Shannon, known here as Shauntsies, became the first Female Non-Huck Relative to receive some smiles. Good work, Shauntsies!

She stopped by on her way to a nearby birthday party, and I decided at the last minute to join her. Troy and Grandma Judy encouraged me to go, assuring me there was plenty of breastmilk in the refrigerator and that they were capable of caring for Huck without me. Troy, who hates parties, was so happy I wasn't making him go with me. It was weird to walk out the door like that with nothing in my hands but a little purse, but I did it. And within minutes of arriving at the party I was showing people (including polite strangers) little pictures of Huck that I was awkwardly carrying around. Shannon, too, was behaving like a proud new mama, telling everyone excitedly, "He was smiling at me like an hour ago!" When I got home around 10:30 (SO past my bedtime) I found Huck sleeping on Troy's chest where he had been since I left at 8:00, and he stayed asleep for seven straight hours. Seven straight hours, people! Tonight Grandma Judy's making Troy and I go out to dinner while she babysits. She's made every single meal for us and has done several loads of laundry. She also is great at rocking her grandson to sleep. I'm starting to feel like a normal person.

Don't you worry about Troy and I only talking about the baby while we're at dinner tonight. Of course we will. There's no reason to worry about it.

one whole month

April 7, 2005, 12:32 pm

Today Huck is one month old!

He's had a pretty great birthday so far. For one thing his doting Grandma Judy is here giving him lots of kisses and lovin'. Yesterday she rocked him to sleep and he stayed that way for three hours! All parents love grandmas like that.

In his old age Huck has become quite the smiler. Our friend Todd is the first non-Huck-parent to receive several smiles and giggles, and his one year old daughter Gracie is the first toddler to say "Huck" and blow him a kiss. They're practically married now.

guarding huck

April 3, 2005, 9:31 pm

I think this picture reveals Huck's full belly quite nicely. It reveals Huck's little guard dog, too. This morning Huck was sleeping on the couch and Max sat right next to him staring intently. It wasn't that creepy kind of "I'm trying to figure out how to eat him" stare, but rather "I must make sure he does not roll off the couch." (Don't worry, I had many pillows stacked around him, just in case he suddenly became capable of squirming a great distance.)

But Huck also has Gloria the homeless woman in our neighborhood to watch over him. Troy and Gloria are good friends and recently he gave her a picture of Huck, which she loves. She wanted a special role in Huck's life, like Godmother, so Troy named her Huck's Guardian Angel. "That's nice," she said.

Good ol' Max and Gloria.

practically all grown up

April 1, 2005, 10:26 am

Yesterday was a big day for Huck. He got his social security card in the mail and is now an official person. It cracks us up to see a little piece of paper that says his name on it so formally like that. He also took a bottle of breastmilk from Troy. And when I say he took a bottle I mean he downed it like it was a bottle of whiskey and he was a drunken hobo. I was told that he would probably take about two ounces worth, being such a tiny little thing, but he took four ounces in what felt like ten seconds. This is one hungry baby. At his second doctor's appointment he had gained 20 ounces in one week. They want babies to gain at least eight. That's Troy's boy!!!

In other yesterday news he also fell asleep on his own in the crib. I had put him in there so I could go to the bathroom (I mean, a person has to go to the bathroom occasionally) and put on shoes for our afternoon walk, and when I came to get him he was asleep. I know, I know, this doesn't sound SO amazing, but little newborns need you to rock them or nurse them to sleep. They don't just fall asleep on their own. So there I was all dressed and ready to go and he was asleep. So I cleaned out our closets. Hey, it's hard to just suddenly take a nap when you're wide awake.

So here's Troy feeding Huck his first bottle ...
