funny boy

Just when I think Huck has reached his limit in humor and entertainment, he develops a new quirky side to himself that is both hilarious and shocking. For instance, the other evening we had a few friends over and Huck very politely asked Shannon to take off her shoes and pants and join him in the bedroom. This morning he passed me in the kitchen and said, “Mommy, I’ll come see you in a minute,” and sure enough, he did. Out of the blue he announced that “when she was little, Shana liked to play with worms,” which apparently is true. Several times a day he says, “I want to talk about circles and triangles,” and listens very intently as we tell various anecdotes about these and other shapes. And sometimes when he gets into trouble for throwing food or something he quietly sings: "Jesus knows all about our troubles ..." as if he really understands the blues.
Yesterday he asked, "Daddy, do you know what weird means?” He patiently listened to Troy's long answer that included funny facial expressions and then walked up to me and asked, "Mommy, do YOU know what weird means?" It's hard to explain "weird" to King Weird himself.

We just had another exciting CHALK weekend. Our wonderful friends Dezi (director Mike Akel), Chris (co-writer and co-star) and Mike (producer) all arrived on Saturday for the Gen Art Film Festival, and Shannon joined us for a Texas style slumber party. Huck was VERY excited to have some of his very favorite people here and in preparation for their arrival would say things like, "Shannon and Dezi and Mike and Chris and Shannon and Chris and Dezi and Mike and Shannon are coming to play with you." After a very fun-filled day and evening, Huck was put to bed by four entertaining story tellers each reading him a book. Now that everyone's gone he keeps asking, "Where'd our friends go?"
On Sunday night CHALK was shown at the festival and was very well received. Afterwards we got to enjoy a fancy after-party and it was great fun. We love spending time with these Austin friends and will certainly miss it when CHALK is all said and done. (We did, however, decide that we're much too old and frail to stay out past 1AM, especially on a school night.)
The best moment of all came last night when we somehow pulled off a huge surprise for Troy. Gen Art gives out several awards and one of them is the Stargazer for excellence in acting. In front of a movie theatre full of people (including press), Troy was announced as the unanimous winner! Oh, the lies we had to tell to get him to show up last night. He gave a great unprepared speech and was genuinely shocked. Here he is, the world's most deserving winner, with Shannon and me, the world's most wonderful liars, just after his big moment. (Really, they should give the two of us an award for Best Lying Ever.)
We got home to a still awake Huck and a celebratory birthday cake made by Tiffany. Congratulations, Pappy T!

There's hardly anything more entertaining than listening to the mind of a two year old figure out how to communicate. Here are some things that have been coming out of our two year old's mouth lately:
When eating Indian food: “Huck is spicy for the bean.”
When asked if he has a poopy diaper: “No, just another penis wiggling in the diaper.”
After leaving a nice woman in the elevator: “She is a wonderful, wonderful lady.”
When asked why he knocked over his rocking horse Rocky and why he was pretending to eat him: “Huck's eating a gazelle.”
When asked where he is: “He's in the bedroom.” or "He's under the blanket."
While I was helping him zip his jacket: "It's kind of tricky, Mommy."
When waking up one morning and apparently remembering seeing our movie preview: “Daddy said eff-ing see-sucker on the computer in the Chalk!”
While watching dusk happening before his very eyes: “It's making dark.”
While sticking his foot in Max's face: “Lick his feet.”
While singing into his rolled up tortilla: “Daddy, scream for the singer.”
While eating some ice cream: "It's pretty tasty."
When pretending to be Brian: "Daddy Brian tooted."
When scolding Max for licking his stick-horse Buck: "No, no, Max! No lick Huck's Buck!"
After being asked if he was mad: “I'm not upset. I'm happy!”
After seeing me in my Easter dress: “Mama, I like your shirt.”
Upon finding Kadin at Bennett Park one afternoon: “Kadin's crazy!”
While feeding me lyrics I was making up about him to the tune of Rockabye Baby: “He cries for the basketball gym.”
When about to eat some very hot garlic knots: "Daddy, I'm going to blow them down."
And perhaps my favorite was when Count Pinky (Troy's version of Count Dracula) was excitedly counting with Huck. Huck shouted "One, two, three, four, five!" and Count Pinky exclaimed in his dead-on Transylvanian accent, "COUNT HIGHER! COUNT HIGHER!" So Huck raised his voice about 14 octaves and screamed, "ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR, FIVE!" I felt like I was watching some old vaudeville routine, which is how I feel most days.

These days everyone says Huck looks exactly like Troy. We don't see the resemblance except in moments like this. He definitely has some of his daddy's charming energy and can wear a pinkish shirt like no one else.[ 61 comments ] ( 37 views )
little pleasures

We got Huck a red potty because he wanted one really bad. Every now and then he likes to pee-pee in it, but for the most part it sits there in the bathroom feeling lonely and forgotten. Huck’s getting really great at being out of his diaper and not making a mess but instead telling us that he needs to either get back into a diaper or sit on the potty. He loves our excitement when he actually pee-pees in the potty and he also loves dumping it into the big toilet and washing it out. It’s the little pleasures in life that get us through.A few evenings ago Huck wanted his diaper off and since it was nearing bath and bed time Troy wasted no time in whipping that thing off and encouraging Huck to run around naked. Instead Huck wanted to sort of wrestle with Daddy and hide from Mommy on the couch under a blanket. Pappy started complaining about the toots coming out of Huck’s bare bottom and nervously laughed as he said things like, “You better tell me if you need to sit on the potty, son!”
I was cleaning up the kitchen when Huck came running through, quickly depositing a little brown turd right there on the floor. Since I’m training myself not to scream upon seeing something scary (like a worm) I just abruptly shouted in a professional manner, “There’s a poopy in here!” I grabbed Huck and sat him on the potty where he began unnecessary grunting combined with anxious laughter. During this chaos I heard Troy in the living room screaming something about finding Huck-poop all over him while I was screaming something like "Hooray!" over the gross poopies sitting innocently at the bottom of the red potty. Huck nearly lost his mind with excitement, so sure that he’d accomplished something amazing. Nevermind the poopies he’d left all over Daddy and the kitchen floor.
And always being the gentlemanly dog, Max took this opportunity to have a little poopie snack in the kitchen.

Huck’s imagination has gone wild. He pretends his raisons are flies and eats each one with a sort of excited bug-eating madman look in his eyes. Noodles are worms, and though I’ve tried really hard to hide my fear of all things that resemble snakes (partly because I don’t want him thinking of his mom as a scaredy cat but mostly because I don’t want him throwing these things down my shirt thinking he’s funny), just today at lunch he imitated me by screaming at the “worms” in a really high pitched voice. Pappy and Huck love to walk Max and look under rocks and logs for gross things and so now Huck spends his days constantly searching for real ladybugs, rolly pollys, worms and lizards. I smile and act excited but apparently little screams escape my mouth sometimes.
When we’re with other kids he usually goes off by himself, playing with sticks, looking for gross things and talking or singing to himself. Looking just a little bit like the neighborhood crazy person.
All through the day Huck assigns each of us our roles and he calls us by our new names. Sometimes I’m a very fat, fat, fat caterpillar; sometimes I’m a very big, big, big pink bubble. He’s always small things and I’m always gigantic fat ones. Usually when we’re walking down the street heading home from somewhere we’re all dancers. Pappy really embraces this role because he loves to embarrass me, but my dancing is more subtle.
Today Huck refused to go down for his nap, which is very unusual. I was getting very frustrated until I remembered how much he loves to pretend. So I told him to pretend to be asleep, to trick Mommy into thinking he was asleep by shutting his eyes and not talking or making any sounds at all. So he did and fell asleep in about three seconds. Ah, the magic of imagination!
