musical

May 28, 2005, 5:22 pm

Troy began playing his guitar for Huck today, and so far he's a big hit. He gets out his little song book and sings campfire type songs like "On Top of Spaghetti" and "Amazing Grace," and Huck begins kicking excitedly and even letting out occasional high pitched screams. (This could be in part because he was locked tightly on the changing table.) Last fall when I was pregnant we saw one of our favorite singers Dar Williams sing down in Battery Park City, and all through the show Huck kicked like crazy. We got to meet Dar afterwards and I immediately began bragging about my fetus' dancing talents, and she said that meant he would be a music lover. Now if only we could meet Bono and get his thoughts on the subject. (Aunt Tina: get your guitar ready!)

What? Sort of sitting up and holding a little plastic ring? Too much!

can't stay still

Huck is beginning to do all kinds of fancy things with his body as he tries to roll over or sit or stand or walk or fly. When on the changing table he moves as if he is running very fast, except for the fact that he's lying on his back. When we hold onto his hands and say, "Ready?" he gets very excited and lifts his little head up. We then pull him up to a standing position and he looks over his right shoulder, always his right shoulder, as if to say, "How was that, folks?" And lately he's been putting his bent little legs up high into the air and rolling over to his side. He hasn't figured out how to roll all the way over yet. He just kind of wobbles back and forth real cute-like.

During all of these moves he always has a babyish look of determination on his face like this.

I always cheer and compliment him on his strength and talent. Then he relaxes and smiles like this.

For this I went to college? It's a sweet way to spend a day.

walls fall down sometimes

May 13, 2005, 6:47 pm

What an exciting 24 hours Huck has had! He FINALLY got to experience his first New York Crazy Disaster. This huge stone wall right next door to our building collapsed onto the highway yesterday afternoon and we were all kicked out of our apartments. Troy just happened to be coming home to get something he needed for work, and he was a little disturbed to find many fire trucks and firefighters and people pointing up at our building with frightened looks on their faces. Huck and I were just sitting together in the living room having no idea of all the drama going on outside when Troy came bursting through the door shouting that we had to leave.

As we hurried down our nine flights of stairs with firefighters shouting commands, Huck smiled real big and somewhat creepy-like. Apparently he was getting bored just hanging out at home with Mom and Max and wanted a little excitement. We stayed the night with our good friends Jennifer and Pete and baby Quincy up the street and returned to our building this morning where we had to show ID to many police officers before being allowed in. As if that didn't make us feel special enough, when we left a few hours later we were mobbed by a crowd of TV reporters wanting our story. Our story was so boring that I can't imagine we'll be on any news show. Behind Troy and Huck are the desperate reporters.

All this excitement was a little much for our boxing champ. Here he is taking a much needed nap following a much needed bath.

fun times

May 12, 2005, 9:48 am

Basically I spend my days finding new ways to entertain Huck. He is getting more interested in silly things, so this isn't very hard work. It involves lots of tricks with my tongue and lips making crazy noises, and to a two month old baby there is nothing more hilarious. Lately Huck has taken to imitating my noises and facial expressions, and to a 35 year old mama there is nothing more hiliarious.

His latest obsession is lying in the crib staring at his mobile as it plays the same little song over and over and over and over and over again. (Thank you, Aunt T. Sue!) He giggles, squeals and kicks his legs. If I lean over the crib and do my facial expressions, watch out! It's almost too much entertainment. When the song ends he freezes and stares up at the little barnyard animals with gigantic eyes until I come running over and wind them up again. I am thanked by a crazy explosion of laughter. If nothing else he will grow up knowing that he can always count on his mama to come and wind up his mobile.

the adventures of huck and pappy t

May 7, 2005, 10:48 am

Troy read somewhere that babies start picking up on your reaction to things pretty early, and since it is quite natural to make a face and say things like, "YUCK!" when changing a dirty diaper, this can make the baby feel like it's something bad that he's done. So Pappy T being the good Pappy he is has decided to go the complete opposite direction and make Huck very proud of his poo poos. (We don't really call them poo poos. I made that up just now.) I, on the other hand, always scream and yell things like, "OH, GROSS! I'M DYING OVER HERE! HELP!"

Anyway, here's what Troy does. He acts like he's Tom Sawyer and he talks in a real exaggerated hillbilly type accent and says, "Hi, Huck! Let's look for treasure! I hope we find some treasure in here! Oh, lookie, Huck! We found lots of treasure!" Sometimes he shakes it up and says things like, "Let's look for mysteries! Are there any mysteries in here?" If there's nothing in the diaper Tom Sawyer acts disappointed and says, "No treasure? No mysteries? Well, maybe next time!"

It should also be said here that Huck regularly pees and poops on Tom Sawyer but has never done so to me.

rise n shine by pappy T

you wanna know a great way to start the day?

get close (but not too close) to your little baby and as he opens his eyes, smile real big and then say as softly as you can, "hi, there, little one."
then wait for him to take you in and look around and stretch his arms and legs and yawn and smack his lips and then smile the best dang beautiful smile you ever saw.

that's what i did this morning.
