help me

May 24, 2008, 7:29 pm

Huck is very interested in nature, and the grosser the news, the better. For instance, in one of Huck's animal books we learned that the horned lizard squirts blood out of its eyes to confuse enemies. (We also learned that crickets have ears in their knees!) In his animal ABC book, his favorite is V for vampire bat. The illustration is of a bat drinking blood from a sippy cup (not sure who thought that was a good idea). Huck regularly tells people these and other interesting facts, and somehow I have grown to love them.

However, I do not so much love Huck's obsession with blood and death. We spend a lot of time down at the Hudson River and one day recently we discovered a dead fish, crab and eel all together in a hole. Dream come true! (A few days later Huck and I had to pass a real live snake on the path leading down to the river and my heart did not stop pounding for several hours.) Few things get his attention more than dead bugs and birds, causing him to ask some pretty interesting questions about what it all means, including his latest favorite, “When is the day that we’ll die?” As if trying to punish me for something, he recently wrote a song that goes like this: "I know what's inside me! I know what's inside you! BLOOD! BLOOD! BLOOD!" And he regularly follows me around jabbing me with some kind of object saying he needs to take my blood, usually with the same facial expression that he's wearing in the above picture.

This would be my only complaint of motherhood really.

a week in the life

May 18, 2008, 3:16 pm

Over the past week we celebrated my fourth Mother's Day and our sixteenth wedding anniversary, Huck caught the infamous neighborhood throw-up bug of '08 and at one point became fever-delirious with hysterical laughter as he saw things that weren't there, Pappy T suffered many, many horrible allergy attacks, and Huck perfected his "Give me a high five ... PSYCH!" trick. Just another week in the life.

smarty pants

Last week on the subway Huck said, "For goodness sake, are you kidding me?" when the train skipped stops and had to "backtrack," which is now Huck's new favorite word and somehow makes its way into his vocabulary several times a day.

Recently I was correcting his crazy math while reading a counting book together (I'm sorry, but one plus one plus one never equals two) and finally he said he wanted to do something else "because that was disappointing."

And finally, yesterday I was having trouble fixing something for Huck and finally gave up, telling him I would have to work on it later. He sweetly told me, "Maybe when you're 39 you'll be able to do it."

Oh, he's a little dickens, that's for sure.

more than words

May 3, 2008, 12:44 pm

Huck entertains me more than words can say, but I will attempt to describe a few of his recent antics.

Sometimes on the subway a group of young guys get our attention by playing loud music and doing impressive acrobatic dance moves. The other morning Huck was doing some strenuous activity in his bedroom when he came out and asked me to watch him practicing the subway guys’ dances. Huck pushed “play” on his dancing Hummer causing M.C. Hammer’s “Can’t Touch This” to play while he breakdanced on his bed, including many perfect somersaults. He was earnestly trying to be a subway dancer and I hope I never forget this image nor his musical choice, which couldn’t have been more perfect.

Kadin was here for a little play date last week and the two of them were playing with Huck’s trains. They were in disagreement over whether one of the trains should have its freight on or off. After going back and forth about this Huck finally asked Kadin, “Do you want the freight train ON or do you want the freight train OFF?” In typical Kadin fashion he answered, “Yes.” Then Huck looked at me and said, “See, I asked him a trick question.”

And lastly, the other day we were sitting together on a sunshine bench down by the river enjoying a snack and I asked Huck what he wanted to be when he grew up, curious how he would interpret this since he hasn’t yet learned that what he wants to be = occupation. He answered, “A Jolly Roger robot or an aardvark.” I guess we'll give up on that college fund.

Today we're especially thankful for the smiles Huck brings to our faces as we mourn the passing of one of the most beautiful and precious children we ever had the pleasure to meet. Kevin Kruse passed away yesterday at the tender age of two and a half, and our deepest prayers are with his parents, eight year old sister and everyone who loves him.
