let’s get this summer started!

Here in New York the kids don’t get out of school till June 28th, which is very hard for this Kansas girl to accept. For me summer begins Memorial Day weekend and I don’t see this feeling going away any time soon. Huck’s last day of school will be this coming Friday June 4th, as we fly away to Austin on the 8th. To kick off our early summer we've spent most of the weekend outside, thanks to perfectly beautiful weather. Here are some pictures from our Saturday at Coney Island (including one of a New York Daily News photographer taking a picture of Huck buried in the sand).

Last weekend was the school health fair where Huck practiced hula hooping, jump roping, yoga and a relay race and received a lot of free dental products. This morning was his first ever Field Day (complete with DJ), and while the weather was much colder than it looked and emergency hoodies were brought out just in time, fun was had by all! The pre-K class made a grand entrance to "Who Let the Dogs Out" blasting through the neighborhood while we parents lost our minds cheering. I hope I never forget the memory of Ms. Dorothy (and everyone else) dancing to the Black Eyed Pea's "I Gotta Feeling."I gotta feeling I'm gonna miss PS187!

Today was Huck's last tap class, and since he's going to miss the big time dance recital in mid-June, his wonderful teacher Bobby made today a mini-recital. All the parents were invited to watch their routine to "Twistin' the Night Away," as well as a delightful and extremely energetic free dance they call "Happy Feet." Though Huck was very ready to end his tap career (I think it was exhausting for him at the end of a long Monday), he admitted to being a little teary eyed once class ended today. Time to put his worn out black Capezios in the cedar chest next to his sad little ballet shoes.(Notice that he's the only child wearing something of a costume. He insisted on wearing a tank top, sweat pants and the same pair of dress socks for 20 Mondays in a row.)

Huck is very sure of himself most of the time and gives me a very deadly, offended look when I question his superior knowledge. But if I didn't question it, this is what I would believe:
Kermit is not Kermit. His name is Hermit and that's a fact.
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle does not apply to his water use when brushing teeth. At any other time he will smugly tell you, “I like to be green.”
Of course he will never be taller than me because I’m his mother. Duh.
When standing he's not ticklish because he’s a Space Alien. When lying down he apparently becomes human again.
Smarties make him smarter.
He’s intangible AND invincible.
Lies are not lies if really you meant it as a joke once you got caught.
And this is a well-known tongue twister:
Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear
Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair
Fuzzy Wuzzy didn't have any hair, did he?
This is the look I get when I cross him:

Huck has spent the last twelve months talking about our church's annual "spring clean up day," practically counting the hours till he gets to wear too-big gardening gloves, put flowers into the ground, aim a hose at them, and hang out with some of his favorite grown-ups and kids. Today was the day! He would still be there now if we hadn't insisted we go home.I don't remember being this sore and exhausted back in my thirties ...

Today was Huck's show-and-tell day at school and he brought his brand new $5 "Visual Illusions" bargain book from Borders. By now he has a whole lot of optical illusions books and has brought many of them to school to show his class. In fact, I think these books were the reason his teacher decided to assign each kid a day for an official show-and-tell. Anyway, I chuckled as he proudly carried this book to school today and wondered what the reaction would be. Afterwards I asked how it went and he gave me his usual answer to all things school-related: "Good." Then he told me that one of the boys said something rude as Huck began his presentation, which was: "OH NO, NOT THAT AGAIN!" I winced at the thought of Huck's feelings being hurt as he shared a beloved book with his peers, and then I smiled to myself because sometimes I think the same thing.

Mother's Day began with Huck excitedly sticking his school-made gifts into my sleeping face, begging me to wake up so he could open them for me. Seconds later I was the happy and tired owner of handprints and paintings and cards, finally understanding the blue stains on one of his white shirts. Then Huck told me that in honor of Mother's Day I didn't have to do anything I didn't want to do. After a slight pause he asked, "Do you want to go get my water?" I told him I did not.A few hours later Daddy and Huck were in charge of "Troy's World Famous Smoothie Bar" where they served us women a scrumptious breakfast. After church we spent a cold and windy afternoon at the Bronx Zoo where we accidentally discovered our new favorite singer John Farrell, followed by a delicious Indian dinner where Huck nearly fell asleep. That's what happens when you wake up at 5:40 excited to give your mama love.

In the spirit of Huck’s love for mysteries, I would like some help solving some of his mysterious behavior these days.1. A few weeks ago he figured out I was the Easter Bunny and now he’s asking very personal questions about Santa’s true identity. Why now?
2. To sleep at night he’s replaced his five stuffed animals with a little "Monsters Inc" notebook from Aunt Jeni and also carries it around with him everywhere during the day. Why a notebook? Why?!
3. The other day his teacher made me stay after school to talk about a physical fight Huck had in the middle of class, and I’ve certainly had to break up a fight or two on the playground. Then during his class field trip last week the assistant teacher told me with a big smile, “Your son is quite the kisser of the girls.” His sweet friend Cecily is the current object of his affection and he's extremely protective of her, making sure "the mean boys" don't make her cry. However, the two of them never ever speak a single word to each other. Why a lover AND a fighter?
4. He does not want to be anywhere without me and requires about a hundred hugs and kisses before saying goodbye. On the other hand, he can get very angry with me when he doesn't get what he wants, going into a full blown horrible temper tantrum that rivals the toughest two year old you ever saw. Why, Lord, why?!
Anyone? Anyone?
