celebrate good times

Can you imagine the fun Huck has had over the past few days? Abbie came to visit all the way from Denver! Every morning we had coffee with Abbie, just like old times, and we even spent some time on her old terrace (now Kimberly's) looking at the cars and boats down below.

And yesterday we got to be with a whole bunch of our favorite friends at Jennifer and Anderson's VERY fun wedding!

Huck danced the night away on top of Daddy's tall shoulders with a
serious look on his face while doing fancy arm moves and giving the ladies high fives.

He took a walk with Chuck ...

He stared at babies Sophia and Cooper, no doubt reminiscing about his own babyhood ...

He ran around with Kadin on a stage that was dangerously close to a lot of wine glasses, played in a fountain and got his shirt wet, and best of all drank a Sprite with two cherries. What a weekend!

best strangers

June 20, 2007, 2:20 pm

Sometimes I don’t recognize myself. Who is this person doing the hokey pokey at the public library shouting over-the-top, “THAT’S WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT!" while kicking her almost 40 year old legs around? Who is this crazy woman running through the Columbus Circle fountains illegally with her tiny son on a hot June morning with their shoes off? And who is this supposed vegetarian excitedly pointing out the dead fish in the window of a store on 179th Street?

It’s me, Huck’s mama. A bit of a stranger to myself sometimes, but the kind of stranger I want to know. And Huck is always a mix between a stranger and someone I feel like I've known forever. Troy and I still look at him sometimes and say, "Where did you come from?"

Here are some strange stories from the past few days ...

Last week Huck got to finally meet his new baby cousin Sophia Isabella, Rosie and John's one month old daughter! Huck was very excited to go see "Rosie Guy Vecchio" as he called her. I think now that they have officially met he will let her fetus nickname go. Rosie and Sophia showed up at play group yesterday and wouldn't you know that Tia Rosie remembered to bring Huck his Tuesday morning chocolate milk.

After Huck’s nap yesterday we were cuddling together when I noticed his legs looked extra edible. I told him I was going to eat them for a snack and he got a panicked look on his face and shouted, “No! I will eat them!” and began pantomiming eating big chunks of them. This, I thought, was a brilliant defense against Mommy’s frightening eating jokes.

A few days ago Huck made up his first knock-knock joke, and I think he gets his sense of humor from his father, if you know what I mean. It went exactly like this: Knock knock. Who’s there? Lion. Lion who? Lion flower.

This last weekend Huck was playing with red and black shapes that Troy cut out of poster board and keeps in an old cell phone box (really, people, quit buying Huck toys) when he noticed his overly large plastic red shovel and apparently was reminded of the guys he watched making pizza a few weeks ago. He excitedly picked up the shovel, put the squares and rectangles and triangles and circles on it and “gently” put the “pizza” under our futon couch into the “oven.” All these years and I had no idea what good pizza that thing makes.

And lastly, Huck occasionally pantomimes throwing something at us real fast and says, “Here’s money” in a casual tone. This will happen while he’s coloring or playing with toys or reading books. Without any warning he just feels the need to throw money at us sometimes. I like that in a son.

it's good to be huck

June 13, 2007, 2:53 pm

Summer has just begun and we've already had quite a bit of fun, enjoying family and friends visiting, several birthdays, river outings, Dolphin Park, ice cream cones and good old air conditioning. Next week Abbie comes to visit and next month we go to Kansas to see lots of family inculding Aunt Tina home from Guatemala! To quote Uncle Steve, "It's good to be Huck."

Huck's new game is pretending to be Doctor to my Boss. Doctor says, "Boss, do you have any monkeys around here?" and Boss answers, "No, Doctor, sorry." He also enjoys it when I pretend to put ranch dressing on his body after his bath, because that's a lot funnier than plain old baby lotion. He likes to rhyme words and can't keep a straight face when he says "branch bressing" instead of ranch dressing. These games go on for a long time ...

Recently Huck become a little gentleman, saying, "I'm sorry, Mommy" in a very tender, sweet voice many times a day. Sometimes he's referring to nothing at all, but other times he's just stepped on me or pushed past me or hit me in the head with a ball. Sometimes he refers to something as "cool," like he's been saying that word for years. And now when I talk to someone it's like having a constant echo with me, as he repeats almost everything I say as if he just came up with it himself.

The other night while being babysat by our good friends Casey and Matt, Huck told them the following (and they wrote it down so that they could ask us to explain it): "I poop and pee in front of the air conditioner. Why, I do not know." What's to explain? He's a drunk caveman.

Meanwhile CHALK opened at the Sunshine Theater here in New York last week and is doing well. Following the lead in cities like Austin, Dallas, St. Louis and Chicago, it has been extended past its week engagement. We got many good reivews here, the New York Times being most exciting. Our director Mike and producer Morgan Spurlock were on CNN last weekend promoting the movie and we're hoping for more exciting TV moments like that (and wishing we had cable). Our distributors have decided to open the movie up in a whole lot more theaters across the country, including Seattle, Portland, Washington D.C., San Francisco, hopefully Kansas City and the UK! Please go to the website at www.chalkthefilm.com for details and spread the word to anyone you know in these upcoming cities. (Atlanta is this Friday the 15th.) Huck's college tuition could depend on this.

But no pressure.

(An interesting sidenote: every time Huck sees this last picture he points to Morgan Spurlock and asks if that's Mimi, Tiffany's beautiful and very petite mom.)

summer of sisters

June 6, 2007, 9:31 pm

As if seeing Aunt Jeni for a week in Illinois and then Aunt Sheri for an evening here in New York weren't enough, Aunt Lori came for a visit this last week! And she brought Uncle Steve and Cousin Lauren, so it was a fun-filled five days. Huck and Lauren were inseperable, whether it was hula-hooping, running through fountains, eating popsicles or bouncing balls. He rode the Staten Island Ferry and the Toys R Us ferris wheel for the first time and helped us eat the world's best banana split at the FAO Schwarz ice cream parlor. We traipsed through Times Square a few times (and Lauren swears she saw Tom Cruise at John's Pizza wearing either a grey or blue shirt), rode the A train a lot, pointed at the Statue of Liberty, dodged a falling branch at Central Park, and ate quite a few french fries. Thank you, Spencers, for a wonderful visit!

Now it's your turn, Aunt Tina and Aunt Pam ...
