Look what I found after Huck had gone to bed the other night ...
Do you think he used the pacifier? [ 4 comments ] ( 50 views )

Huck is starting to scooch all over the place. Within seconds he went from this spot ...
to this spot ...
to this spot ...
My favorite is when he gets off the rugs onto the hard wood floor and sort of slides backwards like a strange ice skater. This is all making Max very nervous.[ 8 comments ] ( 61 views )

Huck now babbles all day long. We aren't real sure what he's saying, but it seems to be pretty casual stuff. Nothing real urgent. Often his babbles are accompanied by a happy smile as he sticks both feet into his mouth. And as you may have suspected, he has a very cute voice.

Yesterday I lied about Huck's name to a stranger. We were swinging at the park and she was older and had a thick accent, and usually older people with accents don't understand when I say, "Huck." I was tired and didn't have the energy to repeat his name loudly five times, so I smiled and said his name was William. "Hello, William!" she exclaimed. In Parents magazine there is a section called "The Hottest Celebrity Baby Names." They mention Gwyneth Paltrow's baby Apple, and next to it is a box that says "Other Names You Might Like." And there for everyone to see is the name HUCK! He joins other unusual names like Banjo, Jet, River and Kenzo. Apparently names like these say that we are "New Age hippies who'd rather run barefoot in a field than climb the corporate ladder." Frankly, we would rather run barefoot in a field. Preferably with George Bailey. (A little "It's a Wonderful Life" reference for you fans out there.)

We spent the last few days in Virginia with my Aunt Dottie and Uncle Ronnie. My Favorite Cousins Heather and Elliott came with their boys Bryce and Carter so they could all meet Baby Huck! This called for many photo sessions, as you can imagine. While I have hundreds of wonderful pictures of these three, I will just show you one for now.
While there I think Huck waved bye-bye to Max three different times. We are starting to teach him some baby sign language and he seems to really like it. He smiles and sometimes laughs and occasionally grunts when we do the few signs we've learned, like "drink" and "eat" and "dog" and the rarely used "bear." I wave hi and bye-bye to everyone we see all day long, so it should be no surprise if Huck is beginning to catch on. (Plus I did teach my nephew Noah to wave after spending a week with him.) Just today while taking a stroller walk Huck practiced waving at himself. I think he likes communicating with his hands.
This picture perfectly captures Max's feelings toward Huck these days.

Huck is almost six months old now! We are already feeling nostalgic for those early days when he was so tiny and couldn't do anything. We find ourselves seeing younger babies and smiling knowingly at the new parents, as if we are so much more experienced than they are. It's very strange to be considered an expert at anything to do with parenting, but for the parents of a two month old that is exactly what we are. Experts! We've lived through it! We know how it feels!
So at almost six months old here is what Huck does. He sits up pretty well, although we have to be very nearby to catch him as he falls over in slow motion. Although mama's milk is still his main source of food, he also eats mushed up bananas and rice cereal and this morning tried mushed up carrots but didn't like them so much. He sleeps with us now, which makes us a co-sleeping, bed sharing family. Is there anything sweeter than sleeping next to a little baby? He's extremely vocal and loves to grunt loudly and sing in a high pitched voice. He has two little teeth and I have a feeling some more are on the way. He loves Max passionately. He plays passionately, nurses passionately, sleeps passionately, laughs passionately, cries passionately. When playing on his tummy he scooches around a little bit, causing me to suddenly notice how filthy our apartment it is.
And as you can see, Huck now owns sunglasses (thank you, tia rosie!) and has the world's largest cheeks. No six months of our lives can hold a candle to six months with Huck.
