colorful

Huck is an artist, as many of you know, and he spends much of his spare time coloring. He basically colors circles day in and day out. Most mornings he wakes up and shouts, "Cuh! Cuh!" while pantomiming coloring, and he's not satisfied until he is on the ground drawing. We buy him sketch pads regularly but can hardly keep up with him. His preferred medium is crayon, but he also dabbles in chalk and Play-Doh. He knows he’s not supposed to color on anything other than paper, but every single day he confesses that he’s broken the rule and happily takes me to the “no-no.” Usually it’s his toys or his chair or his little table that he’s colored on, but sometimes it’s our hard wood floors. He's an artist, and sometimes he needs to change his canvas. He simply cannot be limited to plain old paper.

You see, artists can be a little eccentric, and since Huck is also a drunken caveman he can be very, how shall I put it? Crazy. Huck is a crazy-one-and-a-half year old drunken caveman artist. He spits and throws and says "no" to every single question asked of him. Yesterday morning he came up to us with a gross little thing on his finger and said, “Booger. Booger.” Pappy T was more excited about this than I was, so he jumped up and got a tissue and taught Huck how to put his booger into the tissue and then blow his nose. That’s all fine and good, I thought. Then a few hours later Huck and I were on the bus and he began passionately digging into his nose and shouting, “Booger! Booger!” while thrusting gross things into my face. These are moments when I make plans to give Pappy T a good talking to. The last speech I gave him was when I realized he was successfully teaching Huck the word “anus” so that he could tell us when he had a diaper rash. Troy, too, is an artist, and they don’t think the way the rest of us do. They’re a little different. (But VERY loveable.)

Yesterday Huck saw the dermatologist and while she checked on his various skin issues he was quite the naked gentleman and showed no signs of his drunken artist ways. She awarded him the prize for being the most cooperative 18 month old she’s ever met. I nodded proudly and decided not to describe to her the amazing temper tantrums he is capable of throwing. When Huck gets angry he screams very loudly and squats. Thank heavens the Incredible Huck makes very fast guest appearances and can be quickly replaced by a giggle box.

Here are a few pictures of the demanding little artist and some of his latest work, taken by our brand new camera that we purchased five days after our old one broke.

one and a half!

Happy 18 months birthday, Huck!

The other night, as if to remind me what a big boy he is, Huck rolled over, looked out our bedroom window and quietly counted to four in Spanish. He also loves for us to write out his name, handing us a pen or crayon and saying, "H! K! C!" He’s practically ready for graduate school.

Yesterday he stopped a stranger on the street to show him his boo-boo and do a reenactment of the thud his head made on the cement. It’s a crowd pleaser every time. He also enjoys telling most everyone he sees about the bird who pooped on his arm three weeks ago. The story begins ominously as he points to his arm with a very concerned look on his face and says, "Poop. Poop." But then comes the happy ending as he smiles and shouts, "Clean! Clean!" We cleaned his shirt and the bird poop went away. Thank heavens I'm always there to translate this confusing tale.

Also yesterday Huck was eating his beloved black beans for dinner when he realized we had forgotten to say grace. So he put his dirty hands together and shouted, “AMEN! AMEN!” which is the way he reminds his distracted parents to pray. I said a quick prayer that went something like, “Thank you, God, for the beans! Amen!” With black smeared all over his face and hands and arms, Huck held nothing back as he happily screamed, “AMEN BEANS!” May we all be so darn thankful for the little things.

We spent the last few days in Virginia with Uncle Ronnie, Aunt Dottie and cousins Heather, Elliott, Bryce and Carter! The fun only stopped twice: once when Huck fell head first off a porch step and once when our camera broke. We have barely recovered from those two events. Happier times included eating at nearly every ice cream store in Winchester (Huck could often be found screaming for "i-geem"), seeing a real live praying mantis up close, playing all kinds of musical instruments, learning to say "CHEESE" when posing for a picture (always accompanied by the sign for cheese, as seen in the top picture), learning to draw ovals, getting spontaneous hugs from Bryce, and having a whole lot of stairs to climb.

The following pictures are compliments of Aunt Dottie's camera.
