keeping huck handsome

September 30, 2007, 10:23 pm

Troy cuts Huck's fingernails and toenails, and I'm in charge of cutting his hair with my teeny tiny unscary fingernail scissors, but it's very difficult because he's sure that I'm hurting him the whole time. For the last year or so Huck's haircuts have been the result of my sneaking up on him, cutting off little hairs here and there, always causing loud cries of fear and betrayal. Troy decided to try his electric razor with a special clipper attachment, a loud and frightening piece of machinery that Huck decided was better than my harmless scissors. He likes getting his hair cut now. With Troy's family background, I should have known he would assume the job of hairdresser.

Rosie, Huck and Kimberly in May 2005:

And September 2007:

Huck says the only difference between these two pictures is that Betty's in the background in the first one. Rosie and Kimberly, however, may argue that there has been a weight gain.

loves

Things Huck loves these days:

Singing "On Top of Spaghetti" (thanks to Kimberly) a hundred times in a row and dying laughing when I get words wrong. ("On top of my toothbrush all covered with ice cream," for instance. Good stuff!)

Making interesting rail road track configurations that no train could ever survive.

Telling tall tales (which some might call lies) and sometimes confusing us and others about reality. ("Daddy got stung by a bumble bee in his eye when he was putting on his contacts.")

Having little converations over lunch or dinner that begin with him taking a deep breath and politely asking, "So, how are you today?" These conversations almost always have to do with our jobs. (He knocks down the buildings of the church with a crane all day.) Usually during these predictable talks I'm supposed to be Shannon.

Talking to real people on the phone when they call, like various grandmas, grandpas, aunts and cousins. I heard him say to cousin Lauren the other night, "Oh, yes, I LOVE hummus!"

Making green spaghetti and other colorful meals with our Play-Doh kitchen set that I possibly enjoy even more than he does.

Matching clothes with Daddy, thanks to a nerdy mother who arranges for this to happen regularly and smiles proudly (with a hint of embarrassment) when someone notices.

Spontaneously breaking out into impressive dance club moves that make him look like he's performing in a hip hop video.

And as of this afternoon, climbing to the top of the Little Red Lighthouse with Daddy, Brian and Kadin, waving to Mommy and her camera way down below.

Can you believe Huck is two and a half years old today? Strangers on the street can’t. They think he is the size of a three year old, at least. At 35 pounds, I think I agree.

This milestone means that Troy and I have survived six months of the Terrible Twos. I would hardly describe Huck as terrible, but he does have his Lord Voldemort moments that find me frantically searching for my wand. Other times he reminds us of Marlon Brando, especially when he’s kind of barreling through the apartment topless with his tough demeanor and handsome face, shouting demands in his cute New York dialect and charming all the ladies. Sometimes that’s Huck: a mix between the worst enemies of Harry Potter and Blanche DuBoise.

On his regular old days, though, Huck is a very sweet little boy, and just when we think we can’t possibly love him more, the next day comes and we do. Recently I was frustrated at a situation and getting very passionate while talking to Pappy T when Huck smiled very tenderly and said, “I’m sorry, Mama. I apologize.” No matter how much I insisted that I was not upset with him or anyone else, he kept begging my forgiveness, finally shouting at me: “I’m sorry you’re frustrated!”

These days we’re working on the way Huck talks to people. He’s pretty bossy with other kids and it’s giving me this awful image of him becoming the know-it-all that nobody wants to play with. Hopefully he’ll soon outgrow the desire to tell children things like: “BE CAREFUL! IT IS DANGEROUS!” or “DO NOT SPLASH WATER LIKE THAT!” or “YOU NEED TO ASK FIRST! DON’T JUST GRAB MY SNACK!” and our very favorite: “NO! IT’S MINE! GO AWAY!”

This last one made us realize that he’s been doing a fine imitation of the Grouchy Ladybug from one of his beloved Eric Carle books for quite some time now. This insect loves to shout, “It's mine!” just like Huck. The book costars a Friendly Ladybug who happily shares the many aphids on the leaf that they both sit upon. We’re trying to convince Huck to be more like the Friendly Ladybug, although we’re all a little grouchy sometimes. Books like this help when your toddler is crazy for bugs.

And speaking of books, Huck hears so many of them that he’s naturally memorized most of the words from his favorites. I love catching him sitting alone and reciting almost word for word an entire book, always imitating our expressions. If he sees me watching he stops and looks embarrassed, forgetting that I’m his biggest fan.

Everyday Huck cracks us up with the things that come out of his mouth. Most recently he told me something with great confidence (having to do with pooping in a diaper and not on the toilet) and he summed it all up with the sentence, “It’s my choice.” The other day I said to him, “You are a big boy,” and he sadly added, “who poops in a diaper.” Lately he’s been telling people: “When I’m older I will poop in the toilet and chew gum and drink soda.”

That’s what we have to look forward to, folks!

(I just asked Huck how old he was today and he said, "Fifty cents a pound.")

our country home

September 4, 2007, 2:52 pm

We spent Labor day weekend in Winchester, Virginia with Uncle Ronnie, Aunt Dottie, cousins Heather, Elliott, Bryce and Carter. We had a wonderful time playing and relaxing, and about an hour outside of New York yesterday Huck declared, "I don't want to go home! I want to go back to Ronnie and Dottie's!" Don't we all, Huck, don't we all.

(If you would like to see some cute passing of time, go back to September of 2006 and 2005 and look at the boys posing together on that very same couch.)
