scarecrow

October 30, 2005, 6:08 pm

Huck's a scarecrow these days, but there's a little crow sitting in a nest on top of his hat, so I don't know how good he is at his job. He is, however, good at making all the neighborhood smile. And he won "Most Life-Like" in our Harvest Festival's Make Your Own Scarecrow Contest. Because if you think about it, we made our own scarecrow. Literally.

And has anyone noticed that all through October every single blog entry's title was one word that started with "S"? That's not easy to do, folks, but I'll do anything for you Huck Heads.

It's possible that Huck will be tired of his costume by Halloween, his third day in a row of wearing it. We're really getting our money's worth out of this one.

sister

As Huck's mama, it's really hard to describe how wonderful it is to watch other people love him. So this last weekend was full of those moments because Aunt Tina Sue was in town to do nothing but play with her nephew. As you can see by a few of the 17 million pictures we took, she pushed him in the swing, taught him to play ball (the coach in her couldn't resist) and danced with him like there was no tomorrow. I think their love affair can best be summed up by telling you that last night he French kissed her.

suit

October 23, 2005, 9:40 pm

Today Huck wore a very fancy little white suit and got himself baptized by Charlie the preacher man! After the whole water on the forehead routine Huck gave Charlie a very grown up, appreciative smile. Aunt Tina was here ALL THE WAY from Kansas, and Shannon came ALL THE WAY from Brooklyn for the special event! Our sweet church was full of Huck's friends. As you can see in this picture, he felt very important.

scholar

Huck has learned to read! Or at least he looks like he's reading. He may be faking it. Life can get frustrating when you "only" weigh 20 pounds and you're not very tall and your fingers don't work as well as you'd like. So when Huck figured out how to turn the pages of his books this morning it was a happy moment. One less thing to get upset about, one more thing to enjoy.

sun

October 15, 2005, 5:43 pm

After eight days of rain, the sun finally came out! During the rains Pappy T. caught strep throat, so that was no fun either. But now it's dry outside and Paps is well and Huck has learned to clap. He also takes his hands and pantomimes playing a trumpet. Not real sure why he's doing that, but it's darn cute.

son

October 10, 2005, 7:19 pm

Years ago some good friends of ours had a son, and these are people who never planned on becoming parents. I remember they told us how surprisingly fun it was to play with their baby. Now that I've got a Huck of my own I understand what they mean. He is surprisingly fun to hang out with, and this says a lot since I hang out with him so much.

He is getting a reputation in the neighborhood for being "that baby who smiles all the time." Today I had him in a front carrier facing out towards the people, and I take it he was putting on quite a show judging from the looks of people passing us. "Life is good, eh?" one gentleman shouted happily.

He now shouts DADADADADADADADA! loudly and enthusiastically. I particularly enjoy when we're out walking in the stroller and he grabs both feet, does a spread eagle with his legs and shouts aggressively at passers by. I don't know where he got this entertaining personality. I mean, Troy and I are so normal and subdued.

Last week we left Huck in the safe and capable hands of our friends Abbie and Brian for three and a half hours. (Apparently one babysitter wasn't enough.) We went to see our friend Shana's play, and while this was wonderful to go out just the two of us and see some good friends and theatre, it was also a little painful. At least for me. Troy was quite grown up about the whole thing, but I did notice he was walking faster than usual toward the subway train afterwards. In the play there was a disturbing anecdote about a baby choking to death on a chicken bone while the dog barked, trying to get the mother's attention. All I wanted to do was grab my cell phone and call the babysitters. "ABSOLUTELY NO CHICKEN BONES! IS MAX BARKING?" I missed him so much, and while Troy may have been walking briskly toward the train, I was sprinting and getting a side ache.

You would think spending all day and all evening and sleeping all night with Huck would equal wanting an evening without him. Not true. He's a wonderful companion.

seven

October 7, 2005, 11:37 am

Today Huck is seven months old! His latest talent is hitting two toys together to make loud noises. When he first discovered he could do this he looked at me with huge eyes and a wide open mouth as if to say, "Can you believe this?!" He gets stuck under the futon at least once a day, and in those instances he looks at me with an awkward smile as if to say, "Sorry! I'm stuck again." He's also starting to pull himself up into the crawl position and rock back and forth. I'm all for putting off this crawling thing for a few more months. It sounds rather exhausting. It's tiring enough chasing around a backward scoocher.

Here are father and son looking very similar.

sicky

October 4, 2005, 1:29 pm

Our poor baby is sick! He's caught his first cold. It is very heartbreaking. He's got a runny nose and a sad cough and watery eyes. The most heartbreaking thing of all is how sweet he's being, full of humble smiles. He's a very nice sick baby.

stuck

One of the problems with backwards scooching is that you get stuck under the futon couch sometimes.
