a gobble gobble good time

November 29, 2005, 11:29 am

Huck just had a very exciting Thanksgiving. Not only did he nibble on some mashed potatoes, but he also spent five days with his wonderful cousins Noah and Lily and his outstanding aunt and uncle Jeni and Nathan. Boy, was our apartment filled with the sounds of little people: insane laughter, occasional cries, happy squeals, interesting sentences. Max gained at least 24 pounds, thanks to Lily's generosity. Based on the way they looked at each other and played together, I predict that Noah and Huck will be great friends. 'Twas a very happy Thanksgiving indeed!

autumn in upstate new york

November 20, 2005, 4:25 pm

We just spend the last few days up in Kingston, New York with the Greenes. It's so nice to have a country home! We slept in front of the fireplace and were surrounded by babies and that's a fun way to spend a weekend if you ask us. Plus Huck taught Mark and Sharron what to expect in a few weeks when Gus is a crawling maniac.

Huck is reminding us of the Lollipop Guild these days.

babyfriends

November 12, 2005, 5:57 pm

Huck doesn't have a lot of baby friends, so when Gus Greene comes for a visit it's extra special fun. Gus and his parents came to spend a few days with us and the babies did lots of serious playing side by side. They also enjoyed poking each other's eyeballs out with their little index fingers. Hooray for lil' boys! (And hooray for Mark and Sharron for taking such good care of Huck while we went out to dinner!)

personality

November 7, 2005, 12:16 pm

A lot of people are commenting lately on how much personality Huck has all of a sudden, how he’s not so much like a little baby anymore. Of course Troy and I have been seeing this side of him for a while now, but he is kind of shy sometimes with others. He’s finally feeling comfortable to show his true colors, much to the delight of his audience. I feel we may have a bit of a ham on our hands.

His newest talent is clapping excitedly. The smallest thing will make him stop, sit up straight and clap wildly while looking for a familiar face to join in on the fun. Yesterday he woke up from a nap in my arms, sat up abruptly and began clapping. I do believe he was applauding his nap. Here in this picture he is clapping while a goose comes over to say hello. Shortly after taking this picture I noticed that Huck was eating goose poop with a disgusted look on his face. Thankfully, he does not like eating goose poop.

He does like trains, following in the footsteps of every child before him. We have trains go by the river near our apartment, and every time he hears the whistle he stops what he’s doing and looks toward our windows with big eyes and an open mouth while I shout hysterically: “TRAIN! TRAIN!" Then we sing his favorite song, “Little Red Caboose,” and when I say we I mean I. When we’re actually down at the river and the train goes by we wave, scream and clap.

He also loves avocados, leaves, grass, dirt, swings, mirrors, cold wind, dancing, Troy’s keys, anything Max does (the feeling is completely not mutual), brushing his teeth, grabbing people’s mouths and glasses, touching things with his index finger, standing on the couch holding onto the back, pretend coughing, spitting, and shouting DADADA, BABABA and MAMAMA.

Now it’s time for me to finally admit that Huck is crawling. Forwards. Not scooching backwards, but actually crawling FORWARDS. He’s still pretty slow, thank the good Lord, but he definitely cannot be trusted to stay in the same spot for more than two seconds. I predict I’m about to get a lot of exercise.

Several times a day strangers ask me, “Is he always this happy?” I’ve decided my new clever answer is going to be, “Just don’t cross him.” He’s got a darling little Hottman temper, and when you put a hat on his head or, say, I don't know, take away a screw that he found on the floor, he lets you have it! Oh, the face gets twisted up and red and angry. His little eyes dart back and forth. He lets out a yell and a horrible grunt that is very convincing. Luckily, I know all about the Hottman temper, and I’m pretty good at quickly distracting Huck with a very funny facial expression that almost always leads to smiling and insane giggling. Basically I cross my eyes and stick my tongue out. It’s hard to resist.

You may be wondering about that “screw he found on the floor” that I mentioned rather casually. The other day I stepped out of the room for less than two seconds, came back in and caught Huck playing with a screw that had apparently fallen out of one of our kitchen chairs that Troy assembled. (Not that Troy didn’t put the chair together well. Sometimes screws just fall out of furniture that is put together perfectly.) I took the screw out of his hand and began a very passionate monologue about how careful we must be now that he’s practically running marathons. So don’t you worry: we’re going to make sure he never finds a screw on the floor again!

Happy eight month birthday, Huck!!!
