giving thanks

November 29, 2007, 2:55 pm

We returned last night from our big Thanksgiving vacation where we sat in hot tubs & by a bon fire, toasted marshmallows & danced in a barn, played in many sand and leaf piles, discovered the fun of fly swatters, yard sticks, vans & marbles, spent an evening with lots of "old" friends & their beautiful children, and celebrated Tina & Scott's marriage, Grandma Hottman's birthday and Jeni & Nathan's anniversary! Time for a really long nap ...

Huck is very in love with his cousins Megan, Lauren, Noah, Lily and Shelby. I barely got the time of day all week. Thanks, kids!

fall friends

November 19, 2007, 4:26 pm

Fall is my very favorite time, and when I hear of a person who feels the same way I like them even more. Wouldn't you know it, Huck is one of those wonderful fall people. We've been admiring the changing leaves for the past few weeks (he says that some of them are silver), and during one of these adventures he exclaimed, "Hey! Halloween is in Fall Time! How about that?!"

Nothing makes me understand thankfulness more than looking at the colors of autumn while walking hand in hand with Huck and Troy.

Our friend Heather is another autumn lover. She and her family left New York a few falls ago, and now when October comes along she always asks me how the Hudson River looks this time of year and requests some photos. It's one of my favorite new traditions, taking autumn pictures with Huck for Heather.

So Heather, these are for you! (And all the rest of us fall friends.)

We leave for Kansas in the morning. Happy Thanksgiving!!!

no fun

November 15, 2007, 5:18 pm

Yesterday Huck had his first professional hair trim (as the lady there taught me to say instead of scary "hair cut") by Pappy T's barber Nick, and he handled it pretty well except for the constant little sentence, "This is no fun, Mama," and the screaming at the very end that sounded as if he was having his teeth removed without anesthesia.

If he wasn't already looking like a handsome young man, he certainly is now.

a work in progress

Sometimes I forget Huck’s tender age and get swept up in the feeling that he’s my little pal who understands everything I talk about and can hold up a conversation just like everyone else. Because a lot of the time this is true. But then he will say something so absurd, so nonsensical, so confusing, and I remember that he’s this little two and a half year old whose brain is kind of small. I’m most reminded of this when he loses his mind over something I would consider small and unimportant. He cries so hard and has this look on his face like, “I know this is ridiculous. Please forgive me. It’s just that I’m still so young and can’t really control these emotions quite yet. Help!” So I do my best to help him as I hide the smile beginning to form on my lips because he looks so cute and crazy.

I remember when Huck was first born I wrote something about feeling like we were all on the verge of insanity. I’m pretty sure the three of us had split personality disorders back then due to lack of sleep, unbelievable happiness and tremendous fear that we were going to do something wrong. Thankfully Troy and I recovered quite nicely, but Huck is still in the throes of mental instability. This takes me by surprise sometimes because again, I feel like he’s my normal little buddy who spends everyday with me, when in fact he’s still Jack Nicholson from “The Shining” or even “Terms of Endearment.”

Here are some for instances …

All day yesterday he pretended to be pregnant with a boy in the front and a girl in the back. He never let his unusual situation slow him down, continuing to jump on the bed and play with his trains. Every now and then he’d lie down on his side so he wouldn't "squash the babies," and then he’d jump up and scream, “To the hospital, quick!” pretending to ride elevators and run through the streets, heading to some faraway imaginary place.

None of my regular friends play this way.

Huck has a pretty big vocabulary and has started casually inserting words like “immediately” or “eventually” into sentences. On the other hand, he refers to his feet as “footsies,” horses as “horsies” and will say things like, “It bees your turn.” He’s getting more independent, able to take his own pants and underwear off and having strong opinions about what pajamas he wears. But then he jumps into my arms during his Baby Monet DVD when a zebra puppet sneezes and blows the tulips around because he says it’s scary. He can count very high and write his name and knows what letters most words start with, but he also drools on purpose, laughs hard when he toots, and occasionally wets his pants. A great friend, a wonderful conversationalist, but still a tipsy savage.

he'd like to thank the academy

Here's Huck holding his first ever Emmy Award.

And here he is watching the Emmy Award Winning Cartoon "Big Fun With Global Warming" starring Stinky while cuddling with the Emmy Award Winner himself, our friend, Sharron's husband and Gus's Daddy Mark! (Notice their matching Stinky t-shirts. The photographer is wearing the same shirt.)

Congratulations, Daddy Mark!

(Can Huck keep the Emmy please?)

the boys of halloween

November 1, 2007, 3:02 pm

I just discovered another great thing about two and a half year olds. Huck woke up this morning with no memory whatsoever of his jack-o-lantern bucket overflowing with candy.

I guess we'll have to be good sacrificial parents and eat it ourselves ...
