The other evening over dinner we were listening to wonderful old Pete Seeger peace songs from the sixties that Huck is learning at school (along with Troy who will be accompany the children on guitar) and it was bringing back memories of being a kid and my mom cleaning the house with a bandanna on her head. Every now and then a song takes me there. So then I said something like, “What I would give to right now go back to one of those days and watch my mom walking through the house in that bandanna looking all young and energetic like that,” and it kind of brought tears to my eyes imagining the scene. Then Troy wondered what if 40 year old Huck suddenly entered this apartment and said, “Don’t mind me! I’m just here from the future to see you guys back in 2011 eating dinner in this little apartment.” Huck looked up from his food wondering what his parents were up to now as we both shook our heads at the thought that we’re making history every second of every day with this kid. And one of these days he’s going to be a grownup living somewhere else (though he insists no matter how old he gets he will always live with us, preferably in this same apartment) with hazy memories of his silly mom and dad and their U2 music.
Here’s a picture from April 1970. I’m fresh home from being born and there’s my ridiculously good looking mom and dad, both with their eyes on their first daughter Lori, hoping she’s okay with this new creature sitting on their table. This is the same kitchen that we visit every time we return home to Salina, Kansas, and while Huck would like the same gift given to him one day I would like to say that I do not foresee us still living here in 35 years.

Too much teariness for one morning!! UNCLE!!!
Okay. Never say never. A lot can happen in 35 years (really, it’s closer to 34 years, peeps — he’s going to be six next month!)
And… I may be very silly, but please let the record state that U2 is in no way silly to me.
IF I HAD A HAMMER….!!!!
I love that image of young Linda cleaning. I remember her singing to Jesus Christ Superstar so vividly. Nathan got a tape of her cleaning music as a gift for when I was in labor with Noah! Oh so sweet!
I often imagine what Huck will think of his crazy Mom and crazy Aunt. I can just imagine grown up Huck chuckling at us (let’s hope he enjoys our wit more than his Dad and Uncle seem to…)
It’s funny to see that picture as I have one nearly like it of Troy, Gaylyn and I when Tina was born. I even had the same hairstyle as your mom. It is fun to return to the “old house” but time marches on and things change and now I don’t even have that. Do have the memories though.
