This month has been a whirlwind of warm weather, end of school year celebrations, Fringe Festival preparations, LA Film Festival excitement, bandaging lots of bloody knees and blistering callouses, jump roping and mouse hunting. Huck and his classmates have seen the fifth graders’ production of THE TEMPEST (and can tell you in detail everything that happens in the story); they’ve performed “This Land is My Land” for all their parents during Family Breakfast; they’ve received their exciting and heavy Mighty Milers medals; they’ve honored all the teachers, staff and parents at the June Town Meetings with cards and plants and hugs; they’ve taken their parents to lunch; they’ve released their once caterpillars, now butterflies, into the world; and now they are just about ready to become first graders. At Muscota they keep their same teacher and class for two years in a row, so they are looking ahead to another school year together. Last night we were at the school to see THE TEMPEST again (Huck insisted) and as we left we peeked into the windows of Room 106. He quietly cheered, “Hello classroom! I LOVE YOU!!!!!”
In the midst of all this kindergarten excitement, Troy and I have been working on our play THE BALLAD OF RUSTY AND ROY so that it can be ready for our August first rehearsal date. We’ve hired a stage manager and a company representative, and thanks to many amazing neighborhood friends we have technical support and even a fundraising party planned for June 24th. Tomorrow we get on an airplane and head to LA where our movie AN ORDINARY FAMILY is making lots of “Must See” lists for the Los Angeles Film Festival. I’m very excited to reunite with many friends, to walk on lots of beaches, to hopefully visit Disneyland, and of course to watch our movie in a theatre or two.
But before all that excitement, Huck has another day of school and Troy and I have a rehearsal and a bunch of errands to run, including a trip to the doctor for my infected hangnail. (It’s always something.) Tonight is Friday Family Fun Night where we each pick something fun to do together. Favorite activities include a game of Sorry, building a Rube Goldberg machine and making paper airplanes to fly around the living room. I think I know what my choice will be tonight. Family Massage Chain.

It IS always something!
Just like at the end of JOE VS. THE VOLCANO.
