Few things make me happier than autumn, and it took me a few years to accept that the glorious colors don’t really start appearing in New York until November.
And now that it’s November I can’t stop taking autumn walks. I have hundreds of pictures over the last 14 years of Ft. Tryon Park, the Hudson River and Inwood Hill Park that look exactly alike, because I always have this urge to capture the beauty forever. Yesterday afternoon I dragged my drowsy family to the river (we’ve now extended our walk time to our favorite spot by 15 minutes since moving) so I could see those leaves. Our lovely walk was interrupted by a gigantic hawk landing in a tree right above us with a dead rat hanging out of its mouth. While I continued moving forward, the two of them stayed still and watched the hawk eat its dinner, a first for our annual autumn river walk.
Also new is Huck breaking out into passionate Billie Holiday-like renditions of jazz choir songs. Making us feel like our lives have become a musical, when he got upset with us for not agreeing to walk on dangerous rocks along the river he very earnestly sang the following words:
“You’re mean to me …
Why must you be mean to me?
Gee, honey, it seems to me
You love to see me cryin’.
I don’t know why
I stay home each night
When you say you phone
You don’t and I’m left alone
Sing the blues and sighin’ …
You treat me coldly each day in the year.
You always scold me
Whenever somebody is near, dear.
I must be great fun to be mean to me!
You shouldn’t, for can’t you see
What you MEAN TO ME?”
Sometimes it’s nice to know he is our child after all.
In the meantime, here are pictures of our neighborhood over the past week, including some young explorers checking out the Inwood caves after school last Friday.
This is the hawk eating the rat.

Wowie wow wow! Your pictures of fall always amaze me. That leaf is bigger than your head! The sunshine is so beautiful! And I can almost hear Huck singin’ that song…you meanies!
xoxo
Oh and on the subject of the hawk and rat, I stumbled upon a black snake during a fall hike and screamed and ran. The kids love to tell this story. They of course stopped to observe the snake with Nathan. What is wrong with these people?!
What a gorgeous bunch o’ fall photos! I was there for most all of them and I’m still wowzer’d!
I seriously cannot get over the gorgeousness!!! In the words of t-ROY, WOWZERS PALOWZERS. And I’m going to have a few musical requests next time I see that boy!!
Autumn never ceases to leave me speechless. What gorgeous pictures. Breathtaking ! I stood and stared at our walnut tree for hours this year as it was more beautiful than ever since we’ve been here. Enjoy !!
Awesome pics!! Love the ones by the water, as the dinnertime pic.
Consider yourselves lucky the leaves stay until November- we already have none… when does spring get here??
